Aditi Gupta is an Indian author, educator, and the co-founder of Menstrupedia Comic, an award-winning educational platform that uses comics to promote menstrual health awareness among adolescents. A graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, she is widely recognized for her work in breaking social taboos around menstruation through culturally sensitive and accessible education.
In 2014, Aditi Gupta was featured in the Forbes India 30 Under 30 list for her contribution to social entrepreneurship and education.
Early Life and Education
Born in Garhwa, Jharkhand, India, Aditi Gupta holds a degree in Engineering and a postgraduate qualification in New Media Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. During her time at NID, she met her husband and creative collaborator, Tuhin Paul, with whom she worked on multiple design and social-impact projects.
Her personal experiences growing up—marked by limited access to menstrual education and the prevalence of restrictive cultural practices—sparked her interest in addressing menstrual health awareness. Like many girls in India, she was not formally educated about menstruation during her early teenage years and encountered stigma and misinformation surrounding the subject.
Career and Menstrupedia
Motivated by the widespread lack of awareness around menstruation, Aditi Gupta conducted extensive research for over a year, consulting doctors, educators, parents, and young girls. This research led to the creation of Menstrupedia Comic, which began as her NID thesis project.
In 2012, Aditi Gupta and Tuhin Paul officially launched Menstrupedia, an educational initiative designed to explain menstruation, puberty, and hygiene in a friendly, non-threatening, and culturally appropriate manner. The platform uses illustrated comic characters and storytelling to simplify complex biological concepts for pre-teens and teenagers.
Menstrupedia has since evolved into a global resource:
- Comics available in 14 languages
- Used in 18+ countries
- Adopted by schools, NGOs, and community programs across India
- Educational material implemented in schools across five North Indian states
The platform includes comic books, blogs, learning modules, and Q&A resources focused on puberty and adolescent health.
Impact and Recognition
Menstrupedia’s educational materials have been widely used by NGOs and institutions, including Protsahan, Munshi Jagannath Bhagwan Smriti Sansthan, Instincts, Kanha, and Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. The comics have been positively received by students, parents, and educators in cities such as Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Ranchi, and beyond.
Aditi Gupta has also led awareness campaigns in collaboration with Whisper India, including the widely recognized “Touch the Pickle” movement, supported by public figures and actors such as Shraddha Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Kalki Koechlin, Neha Dhupia, and Mandira Bedi.
Current Work
Through Menstrupedia, Aditi Gupta continues to work at the intersection of design, education, and social change, focusing on empowering young people with accurate knowledge about their bodies and health. Her work emphasizes dignity, inclusion, and informed choice, contributing to long-term cultural change around menstrual health education.
