UMass Chan Medical School recently launched the Pipeline Dreams program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at introducing high school juniors and seniors in Worcester to promising careers in health and science. This program, spearheaded by the UMass Chan Collaborative in Health Equity, prioritizes diversity and equity while fostering student engagement in medicine, research, and public health.
The 12-week program involves 33 students from various Worcester-area schools, providing them with opportunities to interact with healthcare professionals, researchers, and teaching assistants both in-person and online. Through this, students gain exposure to diverse health-related careers, laying the groundwork for their future aspirations.
Dr. Cherise Hamblin, an assistant professor at UMass Chan and the founder of Patients R Waiting, Inc., emphasized the program’s mission to inspire students to recognize their potential contributions to healthcare. She highlighted the abundance of resources available within the Worcester community and the need to create pathways for students to thrive in health and science fields.
Patients R Waiting, a nonprofit co-sponsored by UMass Chan, plays a pivotal role in supporting these students beyond the program. Offering a health equity book club, community calls, and an annual Diversity in Medicine Conference, the organization aims to address racial health disparities while mentoring the next generation of health leaders.
Dr. Crista Johnson-Agbakwu, another UMass Chan professor and executive director of the Collaborative in Health Equity, lauded the school’s history of initiatives like the High School Health Careers Program. She emphasized the need to attract and retain students from underrepresented backgrounds, aiming to build a workforce that reflects Worcester’s diverse community.
The program’s launch included an inspiring ceremony featuring speeches, interpretation services, and professional headshots for participating students. Schools such as North High, Doherty Memorial, and Saint John’s High School were among the institutions represented.
The program is backed by key sponsors, including UMass Memorial Health, the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, and the Schwartz Charitable Foundation. This collective effort underscores a commitment to bridging gaps in access and representation within health sciences.
By fostering early exposure to medicine and science, the Pipeline Dreams initiative is transforming lives and ensuring that the next generation of healthcare leaders emerges from diverse and equitable opportunities.
