Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were reportedly caught in a tense family dispute at a Christmas party just hours before their deaths in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Sources reveal that Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, who has struggled with substance abuse for years, had a heated confrontation with his parents at late-night host Conan O’Brien’s holiday event.
According to the New York Post, the argument was described as “very loud” and left attendees alarmed. “It freaked everyone out and left the Reiners terrified of what Nick would do next,” said a source. The blowout came less than 24 hours before the Reiners were found dead at their Brentwood home, possibly triggered by Nick’s ongoing battle with drugs and his refusal to undergo another rehabilitation attempt after 17 prior stints since the age of 15.
“Nick was freaking everyone out, acting erratically, and kept asking people if they were famous,” a source told People magazine.
A family friend living nearby noted, “Nick was supposedly off drugs, but then talk surfaced that he was not entirely clean. He has struggled with severe addiction to opiates and heroin during his lowest points.”
Despite repeated efforts by his parents to guide him toward professional help, Nick preferred to manage his recovery at home. “They wanted him to get help at a rehab facility, but he resisted and wanted to get better on his own,” another friend said.
The confrontation at the holiday party highlights a larger family struggle over Nick’s substance abuse and mental health challenges, which reportedly spanned years.
