Italy’s Competition and Markets Authority has widened its investigation into Meta Platforms over concerns that the company may be abusing its dominant market position through the deployment of artificial intelligence tools within WhatsApp.
In a new development, the Authority has also launched a separate procedure to consider possible interim measures related to WhatsApp’s updated Business Solution Terms, which were implemented on October 15. The focus includes the integration of new Meta AI–powered interaction tools and features in the platform.
The original probe began in July, but regulators now believe additional scrutiny is necessary to determine whether Meta’s updated policies and AI tools could restrict competition or limit user choice within the digital communication and business services ecosystem.
