The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will see two newly elected members take their oath today. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rathe is set to administer the oath at 11:00 AM in the Assembly complex in Jammu.
The newly elected MLAs include Muntazir Mehdi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who won from the Budgam constituency, and Devyani Rana of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), elected from Nagrota—a seat previously represented twice by her late father, Devinder Singh Rana.
Under Section 24 of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, all MLAs must take an oath before the Lieutenant Governor or an appointed representative, in accordance with the Constitution of India. This requirement follows the abrogation of Article 370 and the repeal of the former J&K Constitution.
With these two vacancies now filled, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s strength has risen to 90 members. The current composition includes:
- National Conference: 41 MLAs
- BJP: 29 MLAs
- Congress: 6 MLAs
- PDP: 4 MLAs
- Peoples Conference, CPI(M), AAP: 1 MLA each
- Independents: 7 MLAs
