Michael Hocker Named Executive Dean of UT Health Science Center’s College of Medicine

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has appointed Dr. Michael Hocker as the new executive dean of its College of Medicine following an extensive nationwide search. Dr. Hocker, a distinguished academic physician and healthcare leader, will assume his role in July 2025.

Dr. Hocker currently serves as the dean and chief academic officer for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine, where he has played a pivotal role in medical education, accreditation, and healthcare expansion. Under his leadership, the school secured full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), expanded its Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, and established new initiatives such as the MD/PhD and MD/MBA programs.

Vision for Growth and Excellence

Excited by UTHSC’s statewide impact and innovative leadership, Dr. Hocker aims to enhance the College of Medicine’s role in training future healthcare professionals, advancing medical research, and expanding clinical services.

“As the next dean, my focus will be on educating and developing future healthcare leaders while fostering high-quality clinical care, research, and community engagement,” Dr. Hocker stated.

A Proven Leader in Medical Education and Healthcare Expansion

During his tenure at UTRGV, Dr. Hocker spearheaded major developments, including the creation of a $156 million UT Health RGV Cancer and Ambulatory Surgery Center and the establishment of a Neurosciences Institute and Human Genomics Center. His work in medical education and workforce development has been instrumental in addressing regional healthcare needs, with 60% of trained residents remaining in the Rio Grande Valley to practice.

Prior to UTRGV, Dr. Hocker held leadership roles at the Medical College of Georgia and Duke University School of Medicine, where he helped establish one of the nation’s top emergency medicine training programs. A former U.S. Navy flight surgeon, he holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a Master of Health Science in Clinical Leadership from Duke University.

Strategic Direction at UTHSC

Dr. Hocker joins a strong leadership team at UTHSC as the institution continues to implement its five-year Strategic Plan and expand research capabilities. Chancellor Peter Buckley praised Dr. Hocker’s leadership and vision.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Hocker to UTHSC. His expertise in clinical practice, education, and community partnerships will be invaluable as we strive to develop a healthier Tennessee,” Dr. Buckley said.

Dr. Hocker’s appointment follows the successful tenure of Dr. G. Nicholas Verne, who has served as interim executive dean for nearly 20 months. Under Dr. Verne’s leadership, the College of Medicine achieved key milestones, including a 93% graduate satisfaction rate and strong USMLE exam results.

Commitment to the Future

Dr. Hocker’s ability to drive philanthropic support will be crucial as UTHSC embarks on fundraising for a new College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building. His leadership is expected to further strengthen the university’s reputation as a premier medical education institution.

“This is an exciting time for UTHSC, and I look forward to working with students, faculty, and the community to advance healthcare in Tennessee,” Dr. Hocker said.
