The Karnataka government has unveiled ambitious plans to construct a state-of-the-art planetarium and a modern regional science center in Raichur. This initiative, spearheaded by N. S. Boseraju, the Minister for Minor Irrigation, Science, and Technology, reflects the state’s commitment to fostering scientific awareness and innovation across districts.
During a high-level meeting, Minister Boseraju emphasized the importance of establishing science centers in every district of Karnataka. He directed officials to expedite preparations for the Raichur center, urging them to complete the project’s design within 90 days. “I have instructed the architectural team to prepare a detailed project report and commence work without delay,” he stated.
The government has also committed to acquiring land for additional science centers in Kolar, Chitradurga, Ramanagaram, and Vijayanagara districts as part of the upcoming state budget. Furthermore, new centers are slated for Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Kodagu, and Belagavi, signaling a statewide push to advance science education.
Highlighting a broader vision, Boseraju announced plans to upgrade the Dr. H. Narasimhaiah Science Center in Gowribidanur to international standards. With the necessary land already identified, a local committee will oversee its development. “This upgrade will establish the center as a hub for cutting-edge scientific research and education,” he added.
The Raichur science center will include interactive exhibits, advanced laboratories, and a planetarium designed to spark curiosity in young minds. Officials were tasked with drafting proposals for the planetarium and ensuring seamless coordination among stakeholders to meet project deadlines.
Dr. Ekroop Kaur, Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, and Sadashiv Prabhu, Managing Director of the Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTEP), participated in the discussions. They highlighted the project’s potential to bridge educational gaps and make science accessible to students and the public.
The meeting also addressed challenges in land acquisition for proposed centers. District Commissioners and officials from the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) were instructed to expedite these processes.
This initiative underscores Karnataka’s focus on regional development and inclusive education. By empowering students with access to world-class scientific facilities, the government aims to nurture the next generation of innovators and researchers.
“Science centers play a pivotal role in shaping young minds and inspiring future scientists,” said Boseraju. “We are committed to ensuring that every district in Karnataka benefits from such facilities.”
As these plans take shape, Raichur is poised to become a beacon of scientific excellence, fostering curiosity and innovation for years to come.
