Russia Launches Widespread Drone and Missile Attacks on Ukraine Amid Miami Peace Talks

Kyiv, 6 Dec 2025 Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile strike across Ukraine on Saturday, targeting locations including western regions far from the frontline. Ukrainian authorities reported more than 650 drones and 51 missiles were used in the attacks. Warning sirens also sounded in parts of eastern Poland near the Ukrainian border.

At least three people were injured in the Kyiv region. Ukraine’s national energy operator, Ukrenergo, said the attacks primarily targeted power stations and other energy infrastructure, continuing Russia’s recent strategy of hitting critical utilities as Ukraine prepares for its fourth winter of full-scale conflict.

Russia’s defence ministry claimed it had shot down 116 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggested Ukraine had hit an oil refinery in the Russian city of Ryazan, damaging a residential building and an industrial facility.

The attacks coincide with ongoing peace talks in Miami between US and Ukrainian officials. The White House hopes the discussions could pave the way for an end to the war, though there has been little progress toward a common agreement. Washington’s proposals reportedly involve Ukraine ceding territory in exchange for security guarantees, which Kyiv is unlikely to accept at this stage. Russia has not indicated readiness to agree to these terms.

Earlier this week, a meeting in Moscow between Vladimir Putin, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner preceded the Miami negotiations. US Vice-President JD Vance described the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a “source of perennial frustration” for the White House, noting that it has proven more complex than anticipated.

European nations have expressed concerns over US efforts in the negotiations. On Saturday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas downplayed recent US national security strategy comments, emphasizing the enduring importance of US-Europe cooperation despite differences.
